POLE-CHANGING MOTORS - POWER ON DEMAND.
Conventional asynchronous motors work in the operating range of the linear speed-torque characteristic. In this operating range, only a small load-dependent adjustment of the speed via the slip is possible. A pole-changing motor, on the other hand, has two to four different pole pair numbers, which can be switched to set the different speeds.

APPLICATIONS FOR POLE-CHANGING MOTORS
Typical applications for a pole-changing drive are operating ranges in which the motor is started from a low speed level. This type of motor is used when no frequency converters or gearboxes are used for speed adjustment. Such requirements arise when there are restrictions in the available installation space. They are also suitable for drive systems in which there are precisely defined applications for speeds and the motors are only operated at the lower speed level for short periods, such as in conveyor systems and machine tools.
